In Spain there are two types of medical care – social and private.
·Social (free) – to have free medical care, you have to have the right to citizenship or have a residence permit in Spain for being a foreign worker which includes all the family. Social funds offer special discounts on medicine up to 80% and the elderly are given medicine free of charge.
· Private (pay) – a medical treatment in private clinics and hospitals is available by paying in cash or by private medical insurance.
The majority of the population (as citizens of Spain, as well as residents) prefers private insurance, which often is more comfortable for its services, but both social and private are one of the most efficient in Europe. Each insurance company offers its customers a list of private medical institutions to obtain quality health care throughout Spain and also covers the cost of health care across Europe.
Normally the standard insurance policy includes any medical care, teeth cleaning once a year, a special examination and diagnosis, annual or semiannual inspections, childbirth and the various operations with hospitalization in good private clinics.
Dental treatments and prosthesis are usually not included in insurance.
